Hi, my name’s Annette Shellenbarger — Registered Nurse, Yoga Teacher, and Certified Holistic Health Coach.

As an RN who has worked in public health, oncology, trauma and surgery, I’ve seen firsthand what lifestyle choices can do to our health — and I’m passionate about helping people reduce their risk for chronic disease.
The good news? I believe we can literally change our DNA by changing how we live.
In fact, an entire field of research, called “nutrigenomics”, is dedicated to identifying and understanding how specific nutrient regimes influence our health and gene expression.
Last year, The New York Times reported on the importance of exercise in this regard. And more recently, The Huffington Post ran an article that talked about how our food choices can preserve not only our health, but that of future generations.
In other words: It’s never too late.

I used to struggle with adrenal fatigue, fibromyalgia, hypothyroidism, hormonal imbalances, weight gain, adult acne, depression — you name it.
I’d wake up exhausted and go to bed exhausted.
Towards the end, I could barely function. I could barely even think.
I thought I was eating healthily, but in reality I was following generic advice that wasn’t right for me or my body. I’d eat things like brown rice and whole wheat bread, but I didn’t realize that I needed to remove grains from my diet entirely.
Even when I cleaned up my diet and started detoxing regularly, I didn’t feel 100%. Yes, things improved — my face cleared up, my hormone levels improved, my adrenal glands began to function in the way that they should — but the extra weight still hung on to my hips, and the aches and pains in my body hadn’t disappeared completely.
I knew I was missing an important link — and I was determined to find out what that was.
THAT’S when I started to study Ayurveda and take my yoga practice more seriously.
And it was embracing the Ayurvedic philosophy that really changed my life and helped close the gap. I discovered that the key was not ONLY eating a clean, non-toxic diet, but having a daily rhythm that followed the laws of nature.
Expanding and contracting with the days and with the seasons.
Waking up before sunrise. Riding different energy levels throughout the day. Honoring the times at which my digestive fires reached their peak. Eating an earlier, lighter dinner before the sun went down.
Avoiding hot, spicy foods in the summertime.
Eating easy-to-digest foods in the wintertime.
And consuming raw, fresh greens in the springtime.
Essentially, giving my body what it needed at different times of the day and different times of the year.
It’s true, it took me a long time to figure things out.
But eventually I lost the extra pounds, ditched my erratic eating habits for good, and healed my body, and it made a huge difference to my life.
I’m more grounded today than I’ve ever been. And I’ve instilled practices and daily rituals that have changed everything for me.
